Investing Strategically in Fintech Startups as a VC – Alokik Advani, Eight Roads

  • Really understand the regulation in their space and understand what has been, what is now and what’s likely to be in the future because that usually creates the opportunity. Almost most of the different waves we’ve seen in, in FinTech comes from regulators.
  • Be very authentic in your pitch because you’re usually dealing with people that live and breathe that product every day, that service every day, especially in the FinTech domain space, people have come as operators, people have come from the industry, they understand that space frame bought. So they’re being really authentic and what you’re trying to do.
  • Because the Fintech space that’s highly regulated. Surround yourself with good advisors and mentors who can guide you.

“[Financial services] are almost in perpetual disruption because you’re constantly seeing an evolution of people try and do it better and faster. “

“Look at every large bank, asset manager, financial institution, there’s entire functions around innovation. Look at tech budgets, it’s significant, billions of dollars. It is a core part of the engine. It’s no longer a means to an end. It is what’s keeping you differentiated.

“With Covid, I think any financial institution that was resisting remote this cloud mobile, mobile access, et cetera, doesn’t have a leg to stand on anymore because you’ve all had to do it for three months and more. So I think that that evolution is only going to be amplified to get to the next gen technologies where there was some resistance. “

“We back [people and companies] for the long term. It’s about, where we have a shared vision. We have an understanding of the space and we have a view of where we think this space and oftentimes it’s matching that shared vision with the entrepreneur and that’s what we’re really looking for.”
