On June 4 2019, Neil Woodford a star manager suspended his fund, halting all redemptions. This made sense to protect investors, but it was followed by a considerable outcry from investors, the press and even regulators.
This represented a great opportunity to create a video that would be both timely and evergreen. The evergreen nature of the content comes from the fact that Woodford’s example can be used to understand the challenges of stock picking and asset management.
A new format for financial video
We wanted to approach the subject with seriousness but with an entertaining format. We also wanted something that works across all social platforms without any audio.
Inspired by the fact that both James Bond and Neil Woodford are both British icons and they have a slight resemblance between Woodford and Daniel Craig, we decided to use James Bond as the footage from the story.
The resulting video has so far generated more views than average for the InvestOrama channel but it has also proven more controversial than our usual content, with only 66% like ration vs. an average of 90%.
This is an encouraging experiment and we plan to post more videos using a similar format.
